A case has been filed with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka against expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and four others on allegations of assault and attempted murder by strangulation.
Police have already arrested one of the accused.
The arrested suspect, Aminur Rahman, was produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin on Wednesday, July 22. The court ordered that he be sent to jail.
Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda of the Detective Branch’s Pallabi zonal team, the investigation officer, produced Aminur before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court and sought his detention in custody.
Saiful Islam, a sub-inspector and general recording officer at Dhaka’s Crime, Information and Prosecution Division, confirmed the development to Daily Waadaa.
He said the court received the case statement and first information report on Wednesday and ordered the investigation report to be submitted by August 28.
Obaidur Rahman, driver of Gazi Nazrul, filed the case with Pallabi Police Station.
The accused are Gazi Nazrul Islam, 74; Aminur Rahman, 55; Masum Billah, 41; Motassim Billah, 25; and Rakibul Hasan, 30. Aminur is a cousin of the complainant.
According to the case statement, Obaidur lived at his sister’s home in Rose Garden Tower in the Kalshi area of Pallabi and worked as Nazrul Islam’s personal driver.
Nazrul allegedly visited the residence because of family connections and later developed what the complainant described as an illicit relationship with Obaidur’s niece.
After learning about it, Obaidur informed his family and asked Nazrul to stop. Nazrul allegedly became angry and threatened to kill him.
The complaint said a group in Moghbazar recently obtained several “objectionable videos” involving Nazrul and the complainant’s niece and began blackmailing him.
Nazrul allegedly suspected that Obaidur had secretly recorded the videos and passed them to the media and the group.
The dispute led to an attack on Obaidur on July 14, allegedly carried out by the other accused on Nazrul’s instructions.
At about 11am that day, Aminur allegedly called Obaidur into the drawing room on a pretext. The accused then beat him indiscriminately with sticks, according to the complaint.
At one point, Aminur allegedly pushed him to the floor and tried to kill him by strangling him. The attackers fled after Obaidur’s mother, Tahmina, and younger sister, Mim, intervened and raised an alarm.
Obaidur later received treatment at Kurmitola Hospital.
He said the accused had continued threatening to kill him wherever they found him. He is currently in hiding because of security concerns.
