A local leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), who was shot in an attack allegedly carried out by a rival group in Palash upazila of Narsingdi, died at a hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning, nine days after the incident.

Ibrahim Al Masum, former joint secretary of the Danga union unit of JCD and son of Momin Haji of Hasanhata village, died at around 9am.

On August 1, Masum sustained bullet injuries when members of a rival group allegedly opened fire in the Fakir Bari area of the upazila over establishing dominance. Nine others were also injured in the attack.

According to locals, Masum, Mamun, Zainal and several others were staying at a grocery shop in the area when members of the rival group, including Bijoy, Sabuj, Iqbal and Sani, allegedly attacked them and opened fire.

Masum was injured in the shooting. When others attempted to rescue him, the attackers allegedly beat and attacked several people indiscriminately, leaving nine others injured, including Danga union unit Jubo Dal President Mamun Ahmed and General Secretary Zainal Abedin.

The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Masum was later shifted to a private hospital in Dhaka, where he died on Monday morning.

Shahed Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Palash Police Station, said Masum’s brother-in-law Hasan Md Mohsin filed a case against 37 people on August 4 over the incident.

“Police operations are underway to arrest those involved,” he said.
