DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed, calling him the “most failed minister” of the government and accusing him of failing to contain killings, rape, violence and looting across the country.

Shadik, who is also being discussed as a possible Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, made the remarks while addressing a road march on Saturday.

“The most failed minister today is our Salauddin,” Shadik said.

Pointing to recent deaths, he said the child of a Comilla University teacher who had gone missing a day earlier was found dead on Saturday. He also referred to an incident in Manikganj where, according to him, an expatriate and members of his family were found dead.

“Every day, incidents of rape, fighting, violence, murder and looting are taking place in different parts of the country,” Shadik said. “This incompetent home minister is unable to do anything.”

He also accused the home minister of straying beyond his responsibilities and misinterpreting the law.

“He acts like a mufti and gives incorrect interpretations of the law,” Shadik said.

Shadik further alleged that Salauddin had “betrayed” the July martyrs’ Public Law and the July Charter.

The remarks came amid criticism over a series of violent incidents and questions over the country’s law-and-order situation.

Shadik, currently the vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has emerged as a possible Jamaat candidate for the mayoral race in Dhaka South City Corporation.
