Palestinians gathered at cafés in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Sunday to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, erupting in celebration as Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the trophy.
For many residents, the screening provided a rare escape from the realities of war and the hardships of daily life in the besieged enclave.
Many in the crowd said they supported Spain in recognition of the country's long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.
"We came together to support Spain because it has stood by the Palestinian people for years," Gaza resident Numan Abdullah told Anadolu Agency.
He said the gathering also reflected Palestinians' desire for peace and solidarity with countries they believe support their cause.
"We are a people who seek peace," Abdullah said.
Spain secured its second FIFA World Cup title with the victory, adding to its maiden triumph in 2010, while Argentina failed to defend the crown it won in Qatar in 2022.
