Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president and former national team captain Tamim Iqbal has received honorary life membership of The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday.

Tamim is one of the five new recipients of the recognition alongside former New Zealand women’s team cricketers Suzie Bates, and Sophie Devine; ex-Australia women’s team cricketer  Mel Jones, and India’s Cheteshwar Pujara.

“Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is today delighted to announce that it has elected five international cricketers to Honorary Life Membership,” MCC said in a press release issued on Sunday.

“Iqbal becomes one of a select number from Bangladesh to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club and is one of the country’s most celebrated cricketers,” the press release further read.

“Iqbal also has over 8,000 runs from his 243 One-Day Internationals, topping the list for the Tigers in the 50-over format. He was named as one of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack’s Cricketers of the Year, and Wisden’s Test Cricketer of the Year, in 2011.

“He was recently appointed President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the youngest to assume the role,” it added.

Tamim is the fourth Bangladeshi to become a lifetime member of the MCC.

Former BCB vice-president Rais Uddin Ahmed was the first Bangladeshi to become a lifetime member of the MCC in 1981. Former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury and former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza were included as members in 2003 and 2023, respectively.
