Hasan Mahmud produced the finest bowling display of his career to help Bangladesh rout Australia inside a single day at Marrara Stadium in Darwin, dismissing the hosts for just 198 in Bangladesh's first Test on Australian soil in 23 years.
The right-armer finished with figures of 6 for 55, the best return by any Bangladeshi bowler against Australia in Tests, as the pace trio of Hasan, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain shared all ten wickets between them.
It was only the second time Bangladesh pacers have taken every wicket in a Test innings, after doing so against Pakistan in August 2024, a match in which Hasan also claimed five.
Darwin itself had not hosted a Test since July 2004, when Australia beat Sri Lanka by 154 runs, a game in which Michael Kasprowicz's 7 for 39, the only previous instance of a bowler taking six or more wickets in a Test at the venue.
Australia, having won the toss and chosen to bat, were given a solid platform by Jake Weatherland and Travis Head, who put on 45 for the first wicket. Hasan broke through in the twelfth over, having Weatherland caught behind for 23, then returned soon after to bowl Head for 22. Ebadot removed Marnus Labuschagne for 1 and Taskin accounted for Cameron Green, out for 13, leaving Australia 74 for 4 at lunch.
Steve Smith and Alex Carey then added 55 from 85 balls, the innings' highest stand, before Ebadot bowled Carey for 19. Taskin struck twice more in the middle session, removing Beau Webster for 12 and later Green's fellow top-order men fell away as the innings unravelled. Hasan returned after lunch to have Pat Cummins caught behind for 9 and dismiss Mitchell Starc for 1 in similar fashion.
Brought back immediately after tea, Hasan needed only a short wait for his fifth wicket, with Smith, who top-scored on 71, top-edging a pull off a short ball. Nathan Lyon edged a miscued shot to Tanzid Hasan at midwicket for his sixth, with Lyon making 7 and Josh Hazlewood left unbeaten on 4 as Australia folded in 63 overs.
The total was Australia's lowest ever against Bangladesh in Tests, beating the previous mark of 217 set during Bangladesh's sole win over them, in Chattogram in 2017.
It also stands as their second-lowest first-innings total at home in the World Test Championship era, behind only the 152 they were bowled out for against England in the December 2025 Boxing Day Test.
Hasan's six-wicket haul was his third five-wicket return in Tests, all of them away from home, having previously taken fifers in Chennai against India and Rawalpindi against Pakistan in 2024, in addition to one in county cricket in England.
That makes him the first Bangladeshi bowler to take Test five-wicket hauls in both India and Australia, and he now holds the record among Bangladesh pacers for the most away fifers in Tests, with three. No Bangladeshi bowler had previously taken a five-wicket haul in Australia in any format, with the previous best efforts belonging to Mashrafe Mortaza (three wickets in Tests), Rubel Hossain (four in ODIs) and Taskin (four in T20Is).
Bangladesh have now recorded four five-wicket hauls against Australia in Tests. Mohammad Rafique took 5 for 62 in Fatullah in 2006, and Shakib Al Hasan claimed 5 for 68 and 5 for 85 in the same Test in Mirpur in 2017, before Hasan's effort in Darwin.
Among Bangladesh's pace bowlers, Shahadat Hossain still leads with four career five-wicket hauls from 38 matches, with Hasan now on three from 15. Rubel Hossain and Nahid Rana follow with two apiece, from 9 and 12 matches respectively.
Hasan had said before the tour that he hoped to take at least two five-wicket hauls in Australia, and admitted afterwards that he had often pictured the moment.
Speaking to former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist during the innings break, he said he had relished the challenge of testing himself against one of the world's best sides in unfamiliar conditions, and put his success down to sticking to his lines and lengths and following the captain's instructions, while praising the support he got from his bowling partners at the other end.
Hasan also touched on his build-up to the series, pointing to the four wickets he picked up in the tour match beforehand and the value of his recent stint in county cricket with Warwickshire, an experience he said had benefited him considerably and one he hopes to continue by turning out for Kent in the future.
