Tanzid Hasan Tamim notched up his maiden half-century in Tests as Bangladesh started the second day on the right foot, losing just the one wicket and taking the score to 181-2 at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.

Tanzid remained unbeaten on 74 alongside skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is batting on 28, as Bangladesh now trail Australia by 17 runs in the first innings.

Overnight batter Mominul Haque was the only casualty in the session, getting caught behind just one run short of a deserved half-century.

His dismissal ended a 102-run partnership for the second wicket – Bangladesh’s second-ever century stand in Tests in Australia. Hannan Sarkar and Habibul Bashar had shared the previous one, a 107-run stand also for the second wicket in Cairns back in 2003.

The visitors resumed the day’s play on 96-1, trailing Australia by 102 runs.

Tanzid and Mominul expertly handled the Australian attack, and gradually took their partnership into three figures.

A rare misjudgment cost Mominul his wicket, but skipper Shanto ensured it didn’t lead to a collapse, joining Tanzid at the middle and forming an unbroken third-wicket stand which had so far yielded 43 runs.

Tanzid survived one close call in the morning, as he was dropped by Steve Smith at slip on 62 off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

Bangladesh are now on the precipice of taking a first innings lead over Australia in Australia for the first time.

Earlier on Day 1, Hasan Mahmud claimed a six-wicket haul and Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed took two wickets each as Bangladesh bundled out the hosts inside 200 runs.
