US vs Iran can still happen, if…

Waadaa Desk

Right from the beginning of this World Cup, the entire world has been eagerly waiting to see a clash between US and Iran – two nations embroiled in a war that has cost many lives and has challenged the world order.

The Iran team endured travel restrictions and limited fan support, still remained unbeaten in US soil, drawing against Belgium and New Zealand.

Heading into their final group-stage match against Egypt on Saturday, Iran stand with a chance to reach the knockout stage and stage a showdown against the US – in what would be one of the most politically charged matches in World Cup history.

The United States have already secured their place in the knockout rounds after winning both of their Group D matches against Paraguay and Australia.

Iran, however, are still waiting to confirm their progression from Group G. They are currently in second place in the group after the draw against Belgium.

A possible meeting between the USA and Iran could only happen in the Round of 16 if Iran finish top of Group G.

A victory against Egypt could move them to five points and put them in contention for first place.

However, Belgium could still challenge for the top spot if they defeat New Zealand. In that case, the group winner would be decided through a series of metrics.

If Iran top the group and both teams win their Round of 32 matches, the USA and Iran will face each other in the next round.

The USA, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, will return to action on Friday against Turkey.
