Indian citizen detained after crossing into Bangladesh amid border tensions

Bangladesh’s border guards have arrested a 19-year-old Indian citizen after he entered the country illegally through the Chattogram border.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said Puton Molla, a resident of Ramendranagar village in Sabroom, Tripura, was detained on Monday afternoon from the Andharmanik border area in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram.

According to a BGB statement, a patrol from the Ramgarh Battalion, with assistance from local residents, apprehended the Indian national after he illegally crossed into Bangladesh through the North Andharmanik border area.

The BGB said preparations were underway to file a case against him before handing him over to Bhujpur Police Station for further legal action.

“The Border Guard Bangladesh remains firm, vigilant and active in ensuring border security, protecting the country’s sovereignty, preventing illegal infiltration and combating transnational crimes,” the force said in the statement.

The arrest comes as Bangladesh and India remain at odds over Indian authorities’ attempts to push people across the border without following proper procedures.

Dhaka says it has foiled multiple such attempts in recent weeks and has repeatedly protested the push-ins.

The issue was discussed during a four-day meeting between senior officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh and India’s Border Security Force in New Delhi earlier this month.

Both sides agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing, coordinate patrols and enhance vigilance along the more than 4,000-kilometre border, while reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and stability.

The latest arrest also comes days after Bangladesh formally protested the questioning of PM’s adviser Zahed Ur Rahma at New Delhi airport, another episode highlighting continuing sensitivities in bilateral relations.
